DnD tiefling names

A tiefling name from this generator is a stem, one filler consonant, and one of ten endings — and the filler is not optional. All ten endings begin with a vowel, so before an ending is printed, one of five letters is slid in front of it: l, n, r, s or m. Ten thousand draws at seed 20261030 gave 9,951 distinct full names, and 10,000 of those 10,000 names carried one of those five letters.

Combination counts are products, not draws: 10 onsets x 5 vowels = 50 stems per syllable, so 50 + 502 + 503 = 127,550 stems; x 10 endings = 1,275,500 given names; x 64 surnames = 81,632,000. The 10-letter rule below rebuilds any longer build with one syllable fewer, so the reachable set is smaller than these products.

The junction letter every name carries

The ten endings are -eth, -ion, -ax, -ir, -us, -ath, -el, -or, -in and -aes. Every one of them opens on a vowel — there is no consonant-initial ending in the pool. A stem is an onset plus a vowel, repeated, so a stem always ends on a vowel too. The code will not put two vowels side by side: when the ending opens on a vowel it appends one consonant from a five-item list first, and that letter is the bridge you hear in Kaezo-m-ir or Drivae-s-el.

Across 10,000 draws the five letters came out close to even — 1,939 to 2,042 each, against the 2,000 that an exact fifth would give:

Building a name by hand uses the same three parts: pick a stem, add one of the five letters, then pick an ending. Kaezo + m + ir gives Kaezomir; Drivae + s + el gives Drivaesel; Thesae + s + ion gives Thesaesion. Nothing else in the first name is connective — the surname is a separate compound, covered below.

No given name is longer than 10 letters

The builder works in opening syllables — one, two or three. After the stem and the ending are joined, anything longer than 10 letters is thrown away and rebuilt with one syllable fewer; the one-syllable case is exempt. The ceiling that leaves is 10 letters, and the run stops exactly there: 983 names, 9.8% of the batch, sit at the maximum, and nothing longer came back in 10,000 draws. The shortest names are 5 letters: a two-letter stem, the junction letter, and a two-letter ending.

Names of 5 to 7 letters account for 4,007 of the run (40.1%), 8 and 9 letters for 5,010 (50.1%), and 10 letters for the remaining 983.

The ten endings: 973 to 1,029

In a 10,000-name batch the generator allows each ending at most ceil(10,000 / 10 x 1.25) = 1,250 names. No ending came anywhere near it: the range runs from 973 (-ax) to 1,029 (-ath), a 5.8% band around the 1,000 an even split would give.

Five styles cycle through the batch and one of them is narrower than the others. Noble accepts only endings of three letters or longer, so on one- and two-syllable builds it can pick from just four of the ten — -eth, -ion, -ath and -aes. Three-syllable builds are the other way round: the ending list is narrowed to the six two-letter endings before style is even applied. In this run those four are also the four most frequent endings, 1,019 to 1,029, while the six two-letter endings sit between 973 and 997.

Surnames: 64, each used 156 or 157 times

Surnames ignore style and gender. Every tiefling name takes one of 64 clan names built from eight heads — Ember, Ashen, Thorn, Night, Blood, Sorrow, Dread, Pale — and eight tails — fall, veil, writhe, writ, mark, fell, thorn, shade. All 64 appeared in the run at 156 or 157 uses each: 64 x 156 = 9,984, and the 16 names left over push 16 of the 64 up to 157. That makes the surname the narrow half of the name — 64 possibilities against 8,355 distinct given names.

How this was measured

Pools. Tiefling: 10 onsets (b, d, k, m, n, v, z, s, th, dr) x 5 vowels (a, e, i, o, ae) x 10 endings (eth, ion, ax, ir, us, ath, el, or, in, aes). Surnames: 8 heads x 8 tails = 64.

Sample. 10,000 draws at seed 20261030, gender Neutral, the five styles cycled in order, one balance tracker for the whole batch — the same path the generator takes when you ask it for 10,000 names.

Counting. Ending = the closing the generator reports for that name. Junction = the letter left between the stem and the ending once the ending is cut off. Length = letters in the given name alone, surnames excluded. Repeats = draws minus distinct full names.

Run that line on the homepage, not on this page: the generator script only loads there. It prints the five junction totals, the ten endings with their junction split, the length histogram, the surname spread and 24 decomposed names for seed 20261030 — every figure above, in the order it appears above.

Questions

Why do so many tiefling names end in -ath, -eth or -ion?

Because those are three of the ten endings the generator draws from, and every ending gets a filler consonant in front of it. In 10,000 draws -ath came back 1,029 times, -eth 1,023 and -ion 1,021 — within 3% of each other. The letter right before the ending is always one of l, n, r, s, m, and it belongs to the stem, not to the ending.

How many tiefling names can this generator produce?

1,275,500 given names as a product — 127,550 stems (50 at one syllable, 50 squared at two, 50 cubed at three) times 10 endings — and 81,632,000 once the 64 surnames are multiplied in. Draws do not get near that ceiling: 10,000 draws returned 8,355 distinct given names and 9,951 distinct full names. Any build that would pass 10 letters is rebuilt with one syllable fewer, so the reachable set is smaller than the product.

Do tiefling names repeat inside a batch?

Rarely. 10,000 draws produced 9,951 distinct full names — 49 repeats, 0.49%. The batch caps keep both halves spread: no surname may be used more than twice in a 50-name batch, and no ending may pass 1,250 names in a 10,000-name batch.

How long are tiefling names here?

7.60 letters on average for the given name, shortest 5 and longest 10. 40.1% land in 5 to 7 letters, 50.1% in 8 and 9, and 9.8% sit at exactly 10 — the maximum the builder allows.
