DnD gnome names

Gnomes come in two subraces on this site, and the generator keeps them apart on purpose: separate opening tables, separate endings, one shared clan vocabulary. 10,000 draws each at seed 20261029 produced 23 names that both subraces could use — everything else belongs to one or the other.

Names both subraces can produce23 of ~9,940 — 0.12% Jaccard

Space = openings x vowels x closings for one syllable, plus the same product squared for two: forest 50 x 38 + 502 x 38 = 96,900; rock 50 x 50 + 502 x 50 = 127,500. The 38 and 50 are closing variants — a closing that opens on a vowel takes one of five coda consonants, so forest's 3 consonant endings + 7 vowel endings x 5 = 38, and rock's 10 vowel endings x 5 = 50. These are upper bounds. A 10,000-name draw returns 7,183 / 8,268 distinct given names, which is 75.6% and 86.0% of the 9,501 / 9,618 that uniform sampling of the same space would produce. Enumerating every combination found no two that spell the same name. The shortfall is not names colliding.

The 23 shared names

Both pools draw on the same ten clan names per row and the same vowel set, so a handful of short combinations land on both sides. In 10,000 draws each, the intersection was 23 names; the union was 19,858, which is a Jaccard overlap of 0.12%. If you are naming twins across the two subraces, that is the entire collision space — you are not going to accidentally give a forest gnome and a rock gnome the same name unless you pick one of those 23.

Ending budgets, side by side

The cap the generator enforces is ceil(n / 10 x 1.25) — 1,250 at 10,000 draws. Rock gnome splits its 10,000 almost evenly: two endings at the cap, four at 938, four at 937. Forest gnome does not: three endings sit at the cap, one at 1,205, and six land between 840 and 841.

Closing syllables by name count — forest gnome | rock gnome (forest: 3 x 1,250 + 1 x 1,205 + 5 x 841 + 1 x 840 = 10,000; rock: 2 x 1,250 + 4 x 938 + 4 x 937 = 10,000)

Both columns are what the script printed at seed 20261029 — run the reproduce step on the homepage and you can match them line by line. Take the three endings at the cap and the one at 1,205 out of 10,000: 10,000 − 3 × 1,250 − 1,205 = 5,045. Six buckets share that, 5,045 ÷ 6 = 840.8, so five land on 841 and one on 840. The six are all but equal: 841 is a level, not a leak — the counter spreads the remainder across the six instead of letting any of them run.

How this was measured

Pools. Forest gnome: 10 openings x 5 vowels x 10 endings (wick, bel, nip, in, el, o, y, ick, op, ud). Rock gnome: 10 x 5 x 10 (ick, op, ud, in, el, ank, ur, et, og, ib). Clan names: 8 heads x 8 tails, shared by both.

Sample. 10,000 draws per subrace at seed 20261029, gender Neutral, five styles cycled, one tracker per subrace.

Counting. Ending = the closing the generator returns; overlap = exact string match of full names between the two 10,000-name sets; Jaccard = intersection / union.

Reproduce it

var s=document.createElement('script'); s.src='/assets/gnome-stats.js'; document.body.appendChild(s);

Run that line on the homepage, not on this page: the generator script only loads there, so pasting it here prints Open https://dndnameforge.com/ first, then paste this script in the console. On the homepage it prints both ending tables and the intersection for seed 20261029.
