Dwarf names

DnD dwarf names for the three 5e subraces — twelve hill, twelve mountain, twelve duergar, all at seed 20261031. The three build given names from different syllables and draw surnames from one shared table of 64.

Each row is one draw: hill on the left, mountain in the middle, duergar on the right, same seed, same batch size, separate counters. The first two rows land on the same surname — that is the shared table, and it is the thing measured further down.

One surname table, three given-name pools

Given names = open × variants + open² × variants, where open = onsets × vowels and variants = consonant-initial closings + vowel-initial closings × 5 coda consonants.
SubraceOpeningsClosing variantsGiven names× 64 surnames
Hill dwarf12 × 5 = 604 + 6×5 = 34124,4407,964,160
Mountain dwarf12 × 5 = 606 + 4×5 = 2695,1606,090,240
Duergar10 × 4 = 406 + 4×5 = 2642,6402,728,960

Hill reads 60 × 34 = 2,040 one-syllable given names plus 3,600 × 34 = 122,400 two-syllable, which is 124,440. The 64 surnames are the same eight heads — Iron, Stone, Deep, Anvil, Copper, Boulder, Grim, Frost — times eight tails: forge, beard, delver, heart, vein, back, hold, fist. A hill dwarf and a duergar can therefore carry the same surname; they cannot carry the same given name often enough to matter, which is the next table.

Same seed, same slot: how long the surname match lasts

1,000 seeds, twelve names per subrace. 437 + 397 + 333 + 178 + 189 + 167 + 131 + 107 + 90 + 88 + 83 + 64 = 2,264 of 12,000 slots had the same surname for hill and mountain.

Hill versus duergar came to 1,932 of 12,000 slots and mountain versus duergar to 2,625. The same comparison on complete names — same given name and same surname in the same slot — produced an identical full name across two subraces in 35 of 1,000 batches. The first slot is where the shared table shows most plainly; by the twelfth the batches have drifted apart.

Distinct given names in those runs: 7,468 hill, 6,303 mountain, 5,888 duergar. Mean given-name length: 7.62, 7.73 and 6.70 letters. Duergar is the shortest of the three and the one furthest from the other two, which matches its pool being the smallest — 40 openings against 60.

Questions

How many dwarf names can this generator make?

It depends on the subrace. Hill dwarf: 60 openings times 34 closing variants is 2,040 one-syllable names, plus 3,600 times 34 = 122,400 two-syllable, so 124,440 given names. Times 64 surnames is 7,964,160. Mountain dwarf: 95,160 given names, 6,090,240 full names. Duergar: 42,640 given names, 2,728,960 full names.

Do the three subraces share surnames?

Yes, all three draw from one table of 64 dwarf surnames: 8 heads (Iron, Stone, Deep, Anvil, Copper, Boulder, Grim, Frost) times 8 tails (forge, beard, delver, heart, vein, back, hold, fist). Only the given-name pools differ.

Why do hill and mountain dwarves get the same surname at the start?

Because they walk the same 64-item surname list. Across 1,000 seeds of twelve names per subrace, the first slot held the same surname for hill and mountain in 437 of 1,000 seeds, the second in 397, and the twelfth in 64. The alignment thins out as the batches drift apart.

Do the subraces produce the same given names?

Rarely. At 10,000 draws each, hill and mountain shared 551 given names, hill and duergar 116, mountain and duergar 61. Complete names overlap even less: 44, 14 and 11 respectively. Nothing here is hand-written: the dnd name generator builds each name from the lists counted above.

Reproduce this page

var s=document.createElement('script'); s.src='/assets/dwarf-stats.js'; document.body.appendChild(s);

Run it on the homepage, not on this page: the generator only loads there, and pasting it here prints Open https://dndnameforge.com/ first, then paste this script in the console. It redraws the three 10,000-name runs, the 1,000 same-seed batches and the 36 names at the top, and leaves the result on window.__DWARF_STATS.
